Key West Resort Utilities Corp. (KWRU) provides wastewater treatment for Stock Island in unincorporated Monroe County. During a recent plant expansion, KWRU had Weiler Engineering Corporation (WEC) design and implement a SCADA system to allow for both electronic surveillance and electronic control of the treatment processes.
WEC designed the instrumentation and control systems to included automated control of aeration, chemical feed and other processes, with the ability to remotely monitor the processes and to make adjustments to operator set points.
The design incorporated the C-More Operator Panels technology, allowing the plant operators to use mobile devices to log into the devices to access plant functions.
Increases in wastewater flow created a need for expansion of the existing 0.499 MGD WWTP. Weiler Engineering was engaged to design and permit an expansion of the facility to 0.849 MGD. The design and permitting were completed in fall of 2015 with construction bids being received in December 2015. The expansion included construction of a new 0.350 MGD AWT treatment train and an expansion of the effluent filtration system. Being in a coastal flood zone, the design included auger-cast piles under all structures and was designed to stringent Miami-Dade standards. Work was begun in spring of 2016 and was completed in June of 2017.
